Winter Sports Centres

Winter sports centres in the Auvergne include:

  • La Loge des Gardes, Allier - the only downhill ski centre in the Allier department, (5 pistes, and 35km of cross country ski piste); in the summer people converge on the place to do much the same thing on roller skates, skateboards and other strange contraptions.
  • Le Lioran, Cantal - 60km of piste including 10 of artificial snow plus 150km of cross-country piste
  • Les Estables, Haute Loire - the highest village in the Auvergne at 1343m; only 330 inhabitants in the summer but upwards of 5000 in the winter
  • Mont Dore, Puy de Dome - previously just a spa town, now more known for the winter sports
  • Picherande, Puy de Dome - village at 1100m altitude, good for cross-country ski-ing
  • Superbesse, Puy de Dome - ski-centre created in 1960, with the lack of architectural style one might expect, but 80km of piste
