Thiers

The town of Thiers has been famous since the 15th century for the manufacture of knives; even today there are sixty-odd factories and yet more individual artisans producing the implements.

The old town is fabulously labyrinthine, and is not to be visited unless you have good leg muscles due to the succession of precipitous staircases! Good times to visit are in spring for the knife festival or in September for the national fete of the town, the “Foire au pré”, when all the schools are shut and a big fair is held.
